Fall 2019-Spring 2020

Foundations

1-4: exploration of pattern

5-6: digital and physical modeling

7-8: interior conditions and materiality

1-3: exploration of shape and form

4-7: concept drawings

8-9: experiential rendering

Interior designer’s must be spatially aware of the built world. In this project, different layering and joining techniques were used to create form.

As a designer, it is necessary to explore materiality, abstraction, and multi-dimensional iteration. Utilizing fabrication techniques, physical modeling, and digital software, the user’s experience was explored. With the observation of the natural world, an understanding of our influence was considered.

Building on joinery and spatial skills, individual pieces came together to create a cohesive whole.

This project focused on a gallery for artists of all types. Its purpose is for the artist to be able to create and exhibit their work in one space.

Education is ever changing and needs the ability to be adaptable to many different situations.
Teachers are the number one learning resource and should be approachable and central to
the learning space. An office for the teacher should be private and accessible to the students in need of security. Every student is different and requires different levels of involvement to grasp
concepts.

The space should encourage group work but allow individual work to be completedwith comfort. Appropriate measure to ensure security and involvement within the classroomshould be implemented. Minority populations should have access to the same materials andresources as others. Propper utilization of storage space and moveable furniture should ensurecustomization and a seamless learning environment. Outdoor activities should be encouragedto understand learning can happen anywhere in life. The new space should be adjacent tothe core of the school and near the other programs. Traversing the school should be easy andaccessible. In consideration to health and safety, the programs should be oriented close to thecore but with multiple path and access outdoors. Safety measure and equipment should beutilized inside and out of the classroom to provide a safe transition around the school.

Fall 2020

Brief:

Deepa Doshi and Owen O’Brien live in upstate New York with their four-year-old daughter, Priya. They bought their home almost a decade ago, for its ample yard, location and move-in condition.

They love being able to use the outdoor space in warm weather, when Owen shows off his grillmaster skills and Deepa teaches Priya how to tend to their raised-bed garden of herbs, vegetables and flowers.

Deepa and Owen hope their new bathroom will be both functional and serene. Since they already have a full bath with tub upstairs, they request a
walk-in shower with a built-in seat.

As for an overall design style, Deepa would like to incorporate some visual elements of her Indian heritage into both the bathroom and kitchen,
and Owen is happy to let Deepa take the lead on aesthetics.

Concept:

The Doshi/o’brien family requires a multicultural makeover of their downstairs library into an accessible bathroom. Since the upstairs bathroom has a tub, the family has asked for a walk-in shower with built-in seating. Attempting to raise their daughter to appreciate and respect nature, the appliances in the space will be environmentally friendly and sustainable.

A Bohemian styled space with lots of earthy tones and touches of Indian heritage is desired. Utilizing the space by providing ample storage solutions is required to make it accessible and functional. In shower storage and safety features are a must. A sense of luxury and serenity should make the space feel warm and inviting. The new bathroom will be comfortable for
The entire family.

Concept:

The Doshi/O’Brien Family requires a kitchen that incorporates high-end appliances and lots of storage. Deepa is the main person to please aesthetic wise. Her style is bohemian with a somewhat rustic flare. The kitchen must be inviting and will incorporate warm color tones. Deepa prefers earthy woods and natural tones. She has asked for pops of color, which will be fulfilled through a warm orange, gold, and red. The patterning on the floor and backsplash bring out  the bohemian style.

All appliances must be situated in a safe location that has views of the outdoor deck and the dining area. To direct movement away from the work triangle, a walkway is incorporated on the other side of the island. Access to the outdoor exit is a must. Considering Priya, a microwave and mini fridge outside of the work triangle are crucial in keeping her safe. While Grandma is visiting, she needs access to the kitchen, but will likely not be involved in the cooking process as much. To accommodate all the features asked for, the wall between the kitchen and dining area has been removed to maximize space. Ample storage is a necessity for the various cooking styles displayed by the family.

The intent is to design a community space which promotes inclusion by utilizing various perspectives.  A wide variety of users will utilize the space for work, study, and research. When looking through different lenses, successful elements can be broken down and analyzed. By applying the fragments of space and time, user experience is enhanced through a progression of interactive elements. The design will display a narrative of the past, through the use of different perspectives.

Concept

Raven Run is a place filled with nature, history, and education opportunities. Nestled in the heart of Kentucky, the location is a haven away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Sourcing materials located locally, materiality, and sustainability are much more feasible.

The current pandemic has surfaced the need to practice self-care. Based on a large number of people that were isolated for long periods of time, going back to normal has been detrimental to mental health. Overstimulation will quickly destroy productivity and create further health issues.

To relax, refresh, and rejuvenate, a sense of place and interactivity is imperative. Sensory deprivation therapy allows guests to unplug and re-center themselves quickly and effectively. People have little time to devote to themselves, and so quick recovery is important. Especially in a college town like Lexington.

To follow the innovative needs of Virgin hotels, a proposed corporate sector to implement smart technology throughout Virgin Company is needed. An office space dedicated to finding solutions to make the hotel experience more intuitive and interactive through the use of systems and user research. The goal is to make an office that is as tech-savvy and interactive as the environments they create. Bold and creative environments are expected as a branch of Virgin.

Based on projected data from the US Census Bureau, in less than 20 years, people over 65 will outnumber children under 18. As life expectancy continues to rise, we must make design choices to support the needs of an aging population. Data collected from the CDC calls to action a plan for improved health initiatives and programs. A fourth of seniors report having fair or poor health. High obesity, hypertension, and depression rates of those over 65 confirm the need for intervention. Everyone is aging, and thus everyone should be concerned about the quality of life of those in aging facilities.

Research shows that those with a sense of purpose, independence, control, and homeliness have better outlooks within assisted living scenarios. Prompted with designing an assisted living community in Austin, Texas, I propose a unique concept relating to the diverse population within the location. Its proximity to the Mexico border and having a third of its population identifying as Hispanic/Latino helps define the unique culture. Bringing in Spanish-themed architecture and interior design elements gives a sense of place to the location.
